WHO ARE WE?

Weightlifting Tasmania Incorporated is a hard working bunch of volunteer coaches, parents and support personnel committed to the ethical and professional development of the sport of Olympic Weightlifting here in Tasmania. We have clubs located in Hobart (Elizabeth College) and Launceston (College and PCYC). All of our clubs are run by nationally acredited coaches.

Weightlifting in Tasmania has a long and proud history, which has produced a number of talented athletes over the years. Jason Roberts, Ron Laycock (Dual gold and bronze medallist Auckland, New Zealand 1990), Gino Fratangelo (Silver Medallist - Edinburgh, Scotland 1986) have all competed for Australia with distinction at Commonwealth Games. Gino Fratangelo went on to gain selection for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, and finished 4th at the 1982 Brisbane games, while Ron Laycock finished 17th at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and a creditable 13th at the 1992 Barcelona games. Ron Nylander, a very well respected weightlifting coach (from Hobart) was also selected as games team manager at Edinburgh in 1982.

Our clubs provide opportunities for people of all ages to develop and test their skills in the competition arena. The skills and enhanced levels of speed, strength and flexibility that can be gained from weightlifting can also assist in other areas of life and other sports, in particular, those sports where explosive speed and jumping are involved (ie; most other sports). Our philosophy is to not only produce the talented athlete, but to also produce the quality person, and the same applies to our people who assist in helping our athletes achieve their goals. It is our aim to provide everyone associated with our sport the skills, the enjoyment and above all, a positive experience from their involvement with Olympic Weightlifting.

There are regular opportunities for our athletes compete at state, national and even international events. You are welcome to come to any of our club training sessions and speak to our very approachable coaches to find out what our sport is all about. For club training session and coach contact information, please click on the “Where Are We?” link (see under 'Topics' - above).

We look forward to seeing you soon!
